Does B12 cause acne?

First let’s talk about what B12 is and the vital role it plays in our health.
According to the National Institutes of Health, Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that helps keep the body’s nerve and blood cells healthy and helps make DNA, the genetic material in all cells. Vitamin B12 also helps prevent a type of anemia called megaloblastic anemia that makes people tired and weak. Most people in the United States get enough vitamin B12 from the foods they eat.  However, there are two steps required for the body to absorb vitamin B12 from food.
First, hydrochloric acid in the stomach separates vitamin B12 from the protein to which vitamin B12 is attached in food. After this, vitamin B12 combines with a protein made by the stomach called intrinsic factor and is absorbed by the body. Some people have pernicious anemia, a condition in which they cannot make intrinsic factor. As a result, they have trouble absorbing vitamin B12 from all foods and dietary supplements.How much vitamin B12 do I need?

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the average daily U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is:

  • for people age 14 and older, 2.4 mcg
  • for adult and adolescent pregnant females, 2.6 mcg
  • for adult and adolescent lactating females, 2.8mcg

The B12 and Acne Link

Since acne is a disease of the skin, it was used a model to understand the molecular response of the skin with B12. Research found is that when B12 is supplemented that the bacteria stopped producing their own supplies and instead begin producing porphyrin molecules. Porphyrins can generate inflammation and acne is triggered by inflammation initially. Vitamin B12 actually altered the normal metabolic pathway and activity of the skin bacteria. Researchers also observed that another pathway, the porphyrin biosynthesis, is linked to the B12 biosynthesis pathway. They hypothesize that when there is an elevated B12 level, it leads to an overproduction of porphyrins by P.acnes. Previous studies have shown that porphyrin can induce inflammation and acne .

What can you do?

Have blood work done to determine if you are deficient in B12. Those with an auto-immune disease or practice a vegetarian life, tend to need additional B12.  If your levels are good, avoid supplements that have high doses of vitamin B12 in them.  Don’t take extra B12 just for energy. Limit foods high in vitamin B12. Milk, Cheese, Liver, Kidney, Pate, Clams, Crab, Oysters and Mussels all contain high levels of vitamin B12.

At Bella Grace we customize treatments based on each individual and their type of acne. We don’t believe in a one size fits all approach and work with our clients to attack it all sides because there are many factors that can contribute to acne.  If all areas aren’t addressed then you will never truly get clear and stay clear.

Benefits of Red and Blue Light Therapy

Many have heard about LED but often wonder what the benefits are of LED Therapy. We use it in almost all of our facial treatments.  Here’s why.. according to Pubmed, Research on LED mechanisms has yielded multiple pathways by which clinical benefit is achieved. Light Emitting Diode (LED) phototherapy is the application of light energy to tissue to obtain therapeutic benefits. The energy is used to improve cellular performance. Phototherapy is known for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties and has a variety of applications across many medical fields. Research has shown that phototherapy can: increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, kill acne bacteria, decrease inflammation, improve skin tone, texture and clarity, ease muscle and joint pain, stiffness, spasm and arthritis.

LEDs appear to affect cellular metabolism by triggering intracellular photobiochemical reactions. Observed effects include increased ATP (Adenosine triphosphate, or ATP for short, is the energy currency of life. ATP is a high-energy molecule found in every cell. Its job is to store and supply the cell with needed energy)., modulation of reactive oxygen species, the induction of transcription factors, alteration of collagen synthesis, stimulation of angiogenesis, and increased blood flow.2
Red LEDs specifically have been shown to activate fibroblast growth factor, increase type 1 pro-collagen, increase matrix metallo-proteinase-9 (MMP-9), and decrease MMP-1. An increase in fibroblast number and a mild inflammatory infiltrate following exposure has been demonstrated histologically.3,4
Photomodulated yellow light alters ATP production, gene expression, and fibroblast activity.57 Increased ATP production is thought to be mediated via the absorption of photons by mitochondrial protoporphyrin IX. Interestingly, only photomodulated yellow LED has been shown to produce a tissue response implying that the light’s ability to affect cells is dependent on the number and pattern of photon delivery.8
Blue light appears to exert its effect on acne via its influence on Propionibacterium acnes and its antiinflammatory properties. P. acnes contains naturally occurring porphyrins, mainly coproporphyrin and protoporphyrin IX. Absorption of blue light by these molecules is believed to induce a natural photodynamic therapy (PDT) effect with destruction of the bacteria via the formation of oxygen free radicals. Blue light’s anti-inflammatory effect appears to be the result of a shift in cytokine production.

Near infrared light, also known as monochromatic infrared energy (MIRE), is believed to stimulate circulation by inducing the release of guanylate cyclase and nitrous oxide, which, in turn, promotes vasodilation and growth factor production as well as angiogenesis, leading to subsequent wound healing.  This is used alot with the Wounded Warriors because it is a safe and effective method of healing wounds and helping with pain maintenance.

Our clients love this part of their treatment!

High Frequency for acne

At Bella Grace Home Spa, we incorporate High Frequency into all our of Acne Facials and depending on what we want to treat, many others as long as there aren’t any contraindications (see below).

What is it?
High Frequency is a very low level electrical current. By this time, most people aren’t sure they want to try this and might be thinking oh my goodness I am going to be shocked and come flying off the table. No, we promise that will never happen in our spa. In fact, it is extremely gentle and because it uses thermal heat and a high rate of oscillation there aren’t any muscular contractions High frequency facials are considered a safe and gentle therapeutic approach to skin rejuvenation.

What are the benefits?

The Violet (argon) treats acne prone skin.

* It works as a germicidal to kill germs and toxins on the surface
* It gets oxygen to the inside of the pore (where the bacteria is trying to makes the way to the top) and because bacteria can’t live where oxygen is, the life of the pimple is dramactically shortened. We tell the brides we work with that if they get stress breakouts to let us know a couple days before their big day. Most of the time, if they can come in a get a quick zap or two, their breakouts will be almost all gone if not completely.
* It is important to note that the violet electrodes do not in any way, produce harmful UV rays as the light that they emit does not fall within the skin damaging ultraviolet spectrum.
* Shrink enlarged pores
* It helps to quickly heal and restore the skins’ health.

Orange/Red Electrodes

* Generally used to treat aging skin
* Improves product penetration
* Promotes blood circulation and encourages cellular turnover.
* Encourage lymphatic drainage
* Increases collagen and elastin production
* Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
* Decongest puffy eyes
* Fade dark under eye circles

A Natural Way to Stimulate Hair Growth
For the treatment of thinning hair and to promote healthier scalp conditions, we recommend using the violet electrodes to cleanse the area and rid of follicle blocking bacteria and the orange electrodes to promote blood circulation.

Specific situations in which high frequency may be harmful.
* Jewelry
* Pacemaker
* Metal implants
* Facial Herpes outbreak
* Hypertension
* Pregnancy
* Sunburn
* Infection
* Shingles
* Neuropathy

giving your face a workout with microcurrent

January is almost over and many have hit the gym to tone and strengthen different areas of their body.  A natural way to help strengthen and tone the facial muscles is by using Microcurrent on a consistent basis.

What is it?
Microcurrent is a non-invasive procedure to lift and tone the skin. It increases circulation and increases the collagen and elastin fibers, giving the skin a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

How it works?
Microcurrent is a low level of electrical current that mirrors the body’s own natural
current, sub-sensory in most cases. The intended use of microcurrent is to give a powerful and effective tool in the battle of anti-aging by diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin texture, helps in reducing acne, and overall improvement of the skin.

Benefits of Microcurrent

Fibroblast cells found within the dermal layer of the skin are responsible for
producing collagen. As we age, the collagen levels decrease showing signs of
aging. By increasing Fibroblastic activity, we can soften lines and dehydrate the
skin. This allows the skin to become moisture retentive leaving a wonderful glow.

Muscles are largely made up of protein. By increasing protein synthesis, the
muscles become more ‘plumped’ up and rejuvenated. Elastin is also another
form of protein and again the production of it is increased leaving the skin’s
appearance refined and improved with softened lines and wrinkles.

Helping to heal scars and blemishes providing a wonderful glow to the skin.

Unlike a faradic type of current, there is no stimulation of motor points and
subsequent muscle contraction, therefore the sensation of the treatment is very
comfortable and relaxing.

With many electrical treatments, it is not possible to work close to the eye area.
The skin around the eye is one of the First areas to feature signs of aging giving its
thin density. A big advantage of the Bella Grace Microcurrent treatments is that we are able to work around the eyes to help with tighten, tone, and de-puff.

Celebs like Kate Hudson, Kate Winslet, Goldie Hawn, Naomi Watts, Uma Thurman, Elle Macpherson, Liv Tyler, and Milla Jovovich utilize microcurrent treatments to keep their face on point and red carpet ready!  Why not you?

Do Antibiotics clear Acne?

Welcome to the Bella Grace Blog.  The goal is to share information on a variety of topics pertaining to acne, anti-aging and from time to time videos showing treatments.

Acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S. and has hit epidemic proportions with more than 60 million suffering from acne breakouts. Since some sources state that clogged pores makeup up more than 25% of all visits to the dermatologist, I wanted to start with a question many ask, “Do Antibiotics Clear Acne?”

Before I go any further, let me just say Dermatologists are amazing! They are extremely skilled and very much needed. In fact, I go every year to have my moles checked – you should too. They have also helped family members and friends immensely when early detection of basal cell carcinoma (the most common form of skin cancer and also the most treatable) was key.

However, sadly, when it comes to acne, the most common method to treat it, for many dermatologists, is writing a prescription for antibiotics.  According to PubMed, an Increase of antibiotics and their duration have increased.

Yet, in a study of women over the age of 25 with persistent AV [acne vulgaris], approximately 82 percent failed therapy with multiple courses of antibiotics.

Even though antibiotics can sometimes kill the bacteria temporarily it usually comes back because other contributing factors of acne have not been addressed. It can’t tell what is good bacteria and what’s bad, so it wipes out both leaving your gut weakened due to an imbalance in flora. This can lead to other issues like poor digestion, leaky gut, and Candida.
Resistance to common infections becomes more difficult and should you need help with something serious like staph or MRSA, your options will be limited.  Furthermore, antibiotics do nothing to stop Retention Hyperkeratosis, the overproduction of skin cells within the pore that is seen in acne sufferers.

Needing Help for Acne?
Let’s face it dealing with acne is confusing, frustrating, and very stressful. Many reach out to dermatologist expecting to finally get clear. When that doesn’t happen, they feel hopeless and doomed.  As a Certified Acne Specialist at Bella Grace Home Spa, I offer a comprehensive program for your specific type of acne without the use of medication.  There can be many contributors to your acne and all pieces of the puzzle must be addressed to not only get clear but stay clear.  The road to real results is just a click away!  Click here to schedule your acne consult and first treatment.
